I recently found a clinic and everything, and is ready to go, but my mom told me that she isnt going to spend her time on an animal.....DDx I really want to help my bird, but I'm not old enough to drive yet or do I have someone who could drop me off. I can try walking there, but the problem is, i dont have the money to pay for the exam and treatment...she seemed fine yesturday when the bleeding occurred because a feather had gotten pulled by accident when she was flying around with the other parakeet in the cage...the bleeding was only minor and i had separated them both after looking at her wing.....Today morning i went to check on her, and noticed blood covered half her wing and some drops were stained all over the perches...she is still bleeding and i'm not sure what to do. I'm scared to handle her myself, because i'm scared i might hurt her..does anyone have any ideas i can do? DDx at least an idea on how to stop the bleeding a bit....i really don't want her to bleed to death Dx...

  1. The problem is, on the internet, no one can tell exactly where the bleeding is coming from.

However, it *sounds* as though your baby may have a broken blood feather. You may or may not have noticed a blood feather before, but they are immature feathers that look like sticks filled with blood. Injury to a blood feather is no uncommon, but can cause severe bleeding if it continues to bleed. The only way to stop the bleeding is to actually PULL the blood feather from the follicle. That being said, it's not something I would recommend that you do if you've never seen it done or been shown how by your vet.

Now, if you know someone else who is experienced with birds, they may be able to pull it for you. It's not that difficult, if you know how.

If the bleeding is coming from a feather that has been broken under the skin, it also needs to be pulled in order to stop the bleeding. Think of it as a big splinter that moves around.

If the bleeding is from a scratch or scrape, you can try cornstarch or Quickstop in order to stop it.

Birds can bleed to death realtively easily, so your baby really needs to be seen as it sounds like you are inexperienced in assessing necessary avian first aid.

    Good luck.

  2. walk and take her to the vet and if you don't have enough money i guess you'll have to give her up to the vet so that the bird will be safe and happy and doesn't have to suffer!  i know it'll be hard to give her up if you have to do it but, you want her to suffer and die or be happy and live?  it's your choice!  hope i helped!

  3. call your nearest animal shelter or bird rescue someone should be able to pickup the bird and save it. Hurry birds don't have alot of blood to lose
