Help- my shower is making a honking noise when I try to turn it off!?

I live in an apartment building (top floor). The pipes and the building are pretty old. I just took a shower and when I turned the water off the hot water tap made a terrible honking vibrating noise that would only stop if I left the tap dripping a little bit.

I just went back to check and it has stopped now- I turned the water off and it is fine. Does anyone know what causes this noise though?

The faucet is also now dripping a tiny bit of hot water which it never has before.

  1. it is called "hammering" and the only way to fix it is to remove  the nipple coming out of the wall and see if you can get a nother s***w in the brass part of the  receiver for the shower niple. many times construction folks miss it or are not doing their job right, but it can be fixed as I explained above.

  2. Call maintenance the washer is loose.

  3. the same thing happened to me and i live on the top floor of an apt too. my shower does that occasionaly but it stops after a few seconds.

however, once this happened to my toilet, it was around 4pm. at around 8pm my brother flushed the toilet and the metal cap burst off and water was shooting powerfully for a good 5 minutes. the entire bathroom and hallway outside was flooded.

im just warning you, it probably wont happen but since we have similar situations you should have someone (super or plumber) check it out soon in case it explodes.

  4. Meep Beep, honk honk, bad washer.

  5. Lori leave your water running few minutes to let air of lines.

    Good Luck

  6. the washer is either loose from the s***w or is worn out and needs replacing
