I have a 12 week pineapple conure that is so loving, gives kisses and talks to you, but this week she started pinching us really hard. She has done it before but no so often. How do I punish her to let her know this is bad behavior without making her mean? She was hand fed and I got her when she was 9 weeks old, she has been sweet up till now!

  1. Conure chicks will do this. She probably doesnt realize that thats what she's doing. They use their beaks to feel things and to explore. Gently just move your hand away when she bites and talk softly. If she knows that she gets alot of response from you when she does this then she will continue. Just say NO  and move your hand away.

  2. she may be going through a time period were she is teething like a baby would. Maybe she is just scared or that is how she play.

  3. Definitely do not respond with either anger or any other way! Birds bite because either you will put them down and then they think "Hey cool now I can get down whenever I want by biting!" or if you yell the baby can get your attention and reacting only ever encourages it.

When my baby Green Cheek started biting I just completely ignored him like nothing was happening. No reaction whatsoever. He got over it within just under a week. It took time but it was worth it :)

  4. Biting conures is very normal.

Babies can often play with fingers & nip/nibble fingers. If allowed to do this it can often turn into hard biting.

Distracting the bird with toys everytime it goes to bite will help a lot.

You shouldn't 'punish' a bird for doing things that are either natural to them or things they learn from their human parronts.

she's also extremely young so still in the learning faze in her life. What ever she learns will come from you so it's up to you to reinforce lovely behaviour & ignore bad behaviour.

    i have a conure
