  1. you should put a light over it and get a plastic bag and cover it good so it can get humid and heat inside it will imporve in a while

  2. Here is the URL for an insectivorous plant nursery:  http://www.carnivorousplantnursery.com/

This web site has general information about growing Venus fly traps.  If the information isn't applicable, you can contact the company directly for more information about growing conditions.

It may not have been what you are doing but the conditions the plant was kept in before you received it.  Venus fly traps can be difficult to keep healthy.

  3. A great carnivorous plant website is www.sarcania.com.

  4. If it is winter where you live and the days are short and cool, then the plant is probably going dormant.  During dormancy, Venus Fly Traps aren't very pretty to look at.  Most of the leaf-bases and traps turn black and die back.  Look at the photo in the article here:

When a Venus Fly Trap is dormant, the ideal conditions are just like it would experience in the wild.  That is, temperatures ranging from 35 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit and photoperiods of 8 to 12 hours.  If you are giving the plant natural sunlight, the photoperiod will take care of itself.  You might have to control the temperature a bit to keep it in the right range.  Venus Fly Traps can stand brief freezes, but not extended ones.  You can let it get down to 30F, but don't let it stay there for more than a day.

Also during dormancy, the soil should be kept just moist, not wet.  As opposed to the growing season when the soil should be kept very wet at all times.

If you still see some green at the base of the plant and if you were to uproot it and the rhizome were still white, the plant will be fine.
