Help neded 720P or 1080i?

I'm planning to buy a TV.

The reason why I don't want 1080i is

1) Direct TV is only 720P

2) The DVD player I'm planning to buy the (which upgrades DVD to 720P or 1080i) shouldn't produce too much of a difference between a TV which is 720P or 1080i.

3) I don't have XBox or anything.

4) Don't wanna spend the extra 300

Am I making a good decision by buying 720P or I should suck it in and spend more. After all you don't buy these things everyday.

  2. Look at the facts.  DirecTV will be broadcasting in 1080i in the very near future.  Having said that, 1080i means that only every other frame is 1080, and every other frame is 720.  So, until 1080P is the broadcast standard, 720P sets are the best value if the majority of your TV time is spent watching braodcasts.  If however, you watch a lot of movies, via BluRay, 1080P is definately the way to go.

  3. "After all, you don't buy these things everyday".  That's the reason to go for the 1080i.  If you get a DTV that will only do 720, then you will not be able to upgrade without replacing the set.

I need to clarify something, though.  If we are talking about a >display< resolution of 720 and the set is less than 30 inches, then you are not going to see the higher resolution.  If we are talking about the sets >capability< you really need to make sure it can accept a 1080 signal.  Then you can view any signal available.  There are some sets still available that can olny accept a 720 signal.

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.
