This question has two parts to it ok...... first, I finally found a bit that works really well with my horse it is a combanation bit kinda like this one ....http://lazyheartetackshop.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/media/Short%20Shank%20Combination%20Bit.jpg and I love it, but being that my horse is an app. he has VERY thin hair and the noseband rubs his skin... its not from pulling just from the movement as he walks trots or canters...I even wraped it with athletic pre wrap and it still makes a red spot on his nose....so what should i do? is there anyway to physically thinkin his hair?? alrigh now second... with that bit does the mouth peice respond before the noseband or are they both activated at the same time??

  1. That  is a severe bit....i bet it does rub his nose.  I think you should take that into consideration and think about switching..If your horse is that much of a bull it sounds like he needs to be brought back to basics...try a side pull..and work your stops and your pace....Give his nose and mouth a break...you can get your point across with the sidepull and it wont hurt em if used intelligently    good luck...

  2. Wow, now that bit will stop anything, I'll betcha!

Noseband, curb chain and mouthpiece all work in conjunction.

Suggestion for the noseband part:  Try getting some REAL sheepskin and covering it.  That should protect your app's nose from what looks like rawhide.

  3. I wrap our horses nose bands with vet wrap - which I think is nearly the same thing as prewrap?  You might try some sorta of cotton over the nose band - but it will take away the effect it currently has - then wrap it with pre-wrap or vet wrap?

The bit doesn't have to be harsh - its designed to disperse pressure for a kinder, softer message - Utilizing various pressure points, Combination Bits offer simultaneous interaction of the mouthpiece, curb strap and noseband. When rein pressure is applied or released, the bit automatically disperses or releases pressure to the horse's mouth, chin, nose and poll. Because pressure is dispersed between all four areas, the bits offer succinct and effective, yet very humane communication, allowing the rider to use less pressure than needed with a traditional bit. Subtle pressure is applied to the mouth as the mouthpiece slides on the ring. Rewarding the horse for staying light, the sliding mouthpiece offers encouraging "free play" before completely engaging and applying downward pressure. Together with the downward pressure of the noseband and the forward pressure on the curb strap, the Combination Bit is very effective at asking a horse to relax at the poll.

Edit:  this is a very very common bit used by some of the top barrel racers - I'd venture to bet most barrel racers have something like it in their trailers!

  4. wow, that should stop an elephant!  Wrap in in real sheepskin. Also you could put some of that liquid skin stuff on it (the rubbed spot) - I've used it on girth rubs, so it should work.

I think M-T-G is supposed to work well for regrowing hair

  5. i would try to wrap vet wrap on it thats what i did for my app., and second i think that they pull back at the same time. if the vet wrap doesnt work try maybe try those sheepskin furs and put that on it or just wrap a really smooth cloth on it, thats also what we did for my horse! he is good now though, and he doesnt have rubs anymore!!!!

i hope i helped!!!! contact me if you need anything else!

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good luck!

  6. try putting aquafor on his nose and wrapping the chin strap with a thick tennis racket grip and the mouth piece responds a little bit before the noseband

  7. I think the sheepskin is your best bet.

                     Good Luck ~

  8. They work at the same time. You might want to apply a little Corona ointment on his rub prone spots before you ride. It might ease the irritation. There are many shampoos out there that promote hair growth. No one brand name comes to mind though.

  9. Wow..some bit..at first I thought it was a hackamore I didn't see the twisted mouthpiece.

You can cover the nose part with sheepskin as already suggested...you could use one of the tubes from a halter set.  Is that cable wire..(ouch)..or maybe Sealtex which is a self sticking latex gummy kind of wrap that is used on bits..but that may cause heat and an abrasion..the more you wrap the thicker and "softer" it would be.

    ****EDIT******

The vet wrap concerns me a little as it is rough with that puckery texture..and the way it self seals is harder and really won't provide any cushioning....just my thought!!
