I've got to get my old banger through another MOT but at the moment it costs more than the car itself. Does anyone know of any special offers or discounts?

  1. Dude, before you worry about saving some money on the MOT you need to get the car fixed!

Scan the yellow pages for your local garages, phone them and ask what there going rate is for MOT's, often they have limited time specials on.

    Ja.

  2. Any car will wear its' tyres, and exhausts don't last forever, unless they are stainless-steel.  "Banger-Nomics" is the habit of buying cars for only a couple of weeks wages.  The most you can ever lose, if you have to walk away, is... a couple of weeks wages!  I know people who hand over a four-figure sum for a big service, and a few repairs.  I service and repair my cars myself.

  3. Hi Sammy,

You have to help us a bit here.

Are you talking about discounts for MOT tests, repairs, cars ??

If you list the problems we can give an idea of the cost for you

  4. I would have thought that fixing your present car, if it is only tyres and exhaust which are consumables, would be more cost effective than buying another that is an unknown quantity. Sounds as if the total cost even with 5 tyres would be about £300 which is cheaper than a new car.

  5. That's life, I'm afraid. Don't overvalue your car, but don't fall for ripoff MOT quotes. I've just had my car serviced & MOT'd with synthetic oil & filters changed, two rear shock absorbers, all new brake pipes front to back, two new drop links on the back suspension & new suspension bushes throughout the back end. I thought it wasn't bad at £200, including the MOT at about £50.

Email me a make, model & list of faults & I'll give you an idea of what it should cost.

  6. Nope, sorry. Have you got anyone in your family that know about cars?

Or perhaps a friend of a friend who will do it for you, and probably offer a slight discount and not try ripping you off.

Try taking it to another garage and getting some quotes.

  7. I've found a few that might help.

Nationwideautocentres.co.uk has 10% off if you sign up to their newsletter.

Oakhill-garage.co.uk has up to £45 off a service and MOT but this is only valid till the end of September.

Merityre.co.uk has discount vouchers for loads of different things that you can print off. It has one that gives you 10% off a MOT.

But I think it might be kindest for your car to send it to the scapheap- sorry! You can get £100 for doing this.

  8. Like Michael says, we could do with some more info, Sammy. Car, model, age, what the problems are etc.
