  1. Shock It is chlorine. You need to test the water. How's the pH, how's the chlorine? Chlorine kills bugs and it makes the stuff that falls into the pool heavy so it sinks to the bottom where you can vac it out.

You might have to add pH up or down if the water is outside of the 7.2 - 7.6 range.

  2. yes--- i totally agree--- i use nothing but liquid chlorine --- about 1/2 cup a day ---more if its super hot or rains a lot

  3. I use baquacil, kinda expensive but it is the best. One bottle of sanitizer, two bottles of shock, and one bottle of algecide, and within a day or so you will have crystal clear water. after this the sanitizer is used once a month, and you shock once every couple of weeks. About 75 dollars should get you what you need to get started, this is all chlorine free chemicals.

  4. Why not have a pool company come out on a weely basis and test your water & the Ph level. Tell them you have this product and see if they'll give you a discount off the 1st couple of visits.

If it's small, just change the water a lot.

If it's large, you should have prepared for the big bucks.  You can't use something big without spending money on maintenance.

  5. Many of the "expensive" chemicals available at the pool store are also available at your local hardware store, home depot or lowes, and the grocery store. You can use regular unscented 6% clorox bleach as your chlorine source, Muriatic acid (hardware store) to lower your pH and TA, regular arm and hammer baking soda to raise TA, 20 mule team borax (laundry detergent aisle) to raise your pH, calcium chloride (home depot or lowes) to raise your CH, and Cyanuric acid (stabalizer) can also be found at home depot or lowes. Your best investment ($50-$60) is going to be a reliable liquid test kit such as the Taylor K 2006. This will save you a ton of cash!
