Help on Multi Function Swith Replacement for FORD Explorer 98?

PEP boys charging me $157 for the part and $68 fo rthe labor. Is that price fair? I called the FORD dealer and the part costs only $110 (PEP boys bought the parts at FORD too) but labor is higher at FORD. Can PEP boys overcharge the part costs.. they charged me 157 .. but in fact they bought the part at 110 only?

Yes most places make a mark up on parts. Each shop charges a amount of mark up. Some just charge suggested manufacture list price. Then they charge labor to install it. There is no set amount they have to charge for parts and labor .There mark up and labor pay for the lights, wages and other expenses to run a shop. Yes they can charge you 157 for the parts. They could of charged more or less if they wanted to. They have to make money too........ujn

List price on the part is 110.00. I know that for a fact.

In truth pepboys probably paid less than that for it. The $110.00 is most likely the list price for the part and because pepboys more than likely has an account with the dealer and buys parts from them often, they get a 20% discount off list price. The reason they charge more for the part than they paid for it is to make money. After all they used their money to buy the part which takes money from their total cash flow. If they didnt charge more they would just be hanging their money out there all the time for everything and end up losing money after check and bank fees and only making money from labor alone which they have to use to pay there employees.

There is alot more to running a business than you would realize and there is alot of ovehead involved in keeping a business running and making money. In your situation when it comes to the bottom line dollar you spent when all finished you did better with pepboys than you would have from the dealer due to the difference in labor charges.
