1.  After the middle ages, the Renaissance was a re-discovery of history, and an awakening to the possibility that non-Christian ways of thinking were possible.

2.  Development of oil paints and paintbrushes by the Van Eyck brothers.

3.  Painters studied nature and anatomy, which led to great advances in botany, zoology, and medicine.  The use of their knowledge of anatomy and nature inspired instruction in art for subsequent centuries; students today still do figure studies, anatomical studies, and nature studies.

4.  Their knowledge of mathematics and geometry led to useful methods of perspective and accurate proportions in their depictions of humans.
