I'm really bad at math word problems my algebra teacher gave this problem for my class to solve. At a delicatessen, ham costs $2.49 per pound and Swiss cheese costs $3.79 per pound. The customer has $9.50 to spend on 2 pounds of ham and some cheese. How much cheese can she purchase? Write an equation and solve it. Thank you =)

  1. 9.50 minus (9.50 minus (2.49 times 2)) means

    9.50minus 4.52 equals 4.98

  2. 1.92 dollars worth

  3. Ham = 2 * 2.49 = 4.98

9.50 - 4.98 = 4.52 is the amount she can spend on cheese

x * 3.79 = 4.52 where x is the amount of cheese she can buy

    4.52 / 3.79 = x = 1.193 pounds of cheese

    To make this one equation, write x = ($9.50 - 2($2.49))/$3.79

  4. well

    2.49+

    2.49=

    4.98 so

9.50-4.98=4.52 so you can buy 1 pound of cheese

    your welcome

  5. 1 cheese

  6. ham = x     cheese = y

    $9.50=2.49x+3.79y

    $9.50=2.49(2)+3.79y

    $7.01=3.79y

y= about 1.85 lbs of cheese
