  1. It seems as if the D40x and D60 are popular in these answers, but I recommend the D40. It has the same limitations as the others (other than the megapixels, which don't matter anyway). With the money you save with buying a D40, you can buy another lens or a flash unit!

  2. I am also firmly in the D40 camp. For my preferences, the D40 was a better choice compared to the D60. If you go up to the D80, then you get some additional flexibility regarding what lenses you can use in AF mode. But since this is your first DSLR, that's probably not a big concern.

I will mention the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens in this context though. A friend of mine uses that lens with the D80 -- and that's one lens I wish I could use with the D40 in AF mode.

  3. Go to a good camera store and look at some in your price range.  Hold them in your hands and see how easy it is for you to reach the controls.   You will know the right one for you when you hold it.

Check out the Canon Rebel XTi.  It has been a very popular camera.

  4. I'm also looking for my first DSLR for a class coming up.

So far, I love the Nikon D60, and even the older D40x, but I don't think Nikon makes those anymore.

They're both great for amateurs like you and me. :D

    Good luck!

  5. in the nikon area the new d60 or d80 is very good.

canon i think the rebels are good too

i would go with nikon; you can use old lenses with it.

    hope this helps
