  1. You don't have to chose your major right away- and if you are trying to get out fast- I suggest NOT picking one till you are sure.  Take all the basics you need for the first year or two- and that will give you time to pick subjects that interest you and learn about careers they will take you into.

But- to get out in 4 yrs- take 15hrs minimum a semester- cover ALL the basics- should take 3-4 semesters.  And try to take summer school- classes at your local community college will be cheaper and they should transfer (double check all courses to make sure they do).

I didn't pick a major till my dean said I had to- I waited to the last minute- and I still got out in 4 yrs.

Also- stay in contact with your academic advisors to make sure you do not take classes you don't need.  And once you get a major- sometimes they cut out classes...they did for me- so I could graduate on time.

  2. Given your situation, I would suggest either nursing or IT.

You can earn a two-year (associates program)  LPN (licensed professional nurse) or computer science degree at a community college for pretty darn cheap, usually under $5,000.  If, at that point, you decide to get a 4 year degree, you will a couple of options.

    1) Use your associates degree to get a job and continue to go to school part time.

    2) Get a student loan and continue your education full-time at a university.

The nursing program is much harder than the computer program, and your LPN degree may take 2 1/2 years to get.  Either way, try to keep your grades up.  Grants and scholarships become readily available when you can carry a 3.5 GPA and above, and they REALLY open up if you can carry a 4.0.

The most important thing to remember is that you have the rest of your life ahead of you.  If this situation doesn't work out for you, DON'T GIVE UP!  I'm 38, and I'm in college.  There are 60 year old students there.  Keep in mind that if you make the correct decisions in life, you WILL be able to get a college degree.  It's just a matter of desire and time.

  3. It depends on what subjects you like and find interesting and what you're good at. What did you enjoy most in high school? Why don't you try pursuing that and see how it goes? Or, just start out as an undecided major. There are tons of kids going into college who have no idea what to major in, and even those who do end up switching a few times. Try not to stress about it too much and just focus on getting a good education. I don't think a major should have to do with money, it should be chosen on the basis of what you enjoy and want to do with the rest of your life.
