Help on connecting a Yamaha Receiver & Hi Def TV?

I own a Samsung hi Fi TV & have a Yamaha Receiver, speakers & subwoofer (for 5.1 dolby sound) being shipped. I was going to connect everything into the receiver (including Cable box via HDMI, DVD player HDMI, CD player & older VCR etc.) My question is can I put a tv show on (say a baseball game) but also play a CD or listen to the radio through the surround sound system at the same time? Watch TV station (without the sound), but listen to music. Is it possible or do I need to connect the cable box to a different HDMI input on TV.

  1. There should be a switch, letting you select which Input device that you want to use. So yes, you can have all of them connected at one time, but you can only use them separately.

  2. It is not possible to do it with HDMI connections without manual intervention.

You could run the HDMI cable directly to your tv and use the receiver on the cd input.

Or if you can split the audio and video you could reassign the ports to make it possible.  So if you used DVI and optical for cable and analog for the CD player, it is possible, depending on your receiver to assign the DVI picture with the analog audio.  But since HDMI does both audio and video I'm not sure you can do it.

  3. You don't mention the model of Yamaha receiver or TV.  You will need to include model numbers to get a proper answer.
