Question:

Help on painting my room?

My friends and I are painting my room.

I'm going from a medium light blue to a golden yellow color, although one wall is going to be left white.

So would that be 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint?

Gah, I really have no idea of what I'm doing.

How much time do you have to wait between coats?

Also, my room is around 12 x 12ft, slightly smaller though.

How long would it take to paint it?

And how many friends should I have helping me?

I don't want it to get too crowded, but I want to try to paint it in the smallest amount of time.

Do you think that we could get it done in a weekend?

A weekend meaning Friday night(like 6-10ish), Saturday, and Sunday(12-4).

  1. As a painter, I would be able to paint that room in about 2 hours. If the walls are in decent condition, you should be able to have a good, even color of golden yellow in 2 coats. You shouldn't need to prime it unless the blue is very dark.

Typically, you should wait about 3-4 hours between coats, but turning on a fan in the room can speed up the process a bit. You should need 2 gallons to do the whole thing and still have some left over.

Use a good quality paint too...such as Benjamin Moore....or Behr from Home Depot is alright. Use a "satin" interior latex paint.

Use a 3 inch brush to "cut in" the edges. It helps give you better coverage & you won't have to roll so close to the ceilling & trim when you're rolling.

  2. Well, good news...you don't need any primer. Primer is for uncoated walls, your room has old paint...which makes a primer in itself. You will want to prewash everything prior to painting. Use TSP...you'll find it in the paint section. This really makes the new paint hold best.Use an interior latex paint and don't go cheap with the paint. I would only have 1 or 2 friends to help...otherwise your bumping onto each other. Do your prep work Friday night...move all the furniture to the middle of the room or better yet...get everything out of the room. Remove all pictures, posters, etc. Remove all nails and screws from the wall and fill the holes with spackle. Even if your going to replace the nails...remove them because it will prevent runs.Wash the walls and put maksing tape on the windows (use the blue tape.) It should take about 3 hours for each coat with a good hour in between coats. 2 coats should cover well. Anymore questions...just ask.

  3. One coat of primer should do.

After the first coat of golden yellow has dried you will be able to tell if it needs another.

If you are painting 3 walls of a 12 x 12 by your self it would probably be dry enough to start with the next coat as soon as finishing.

One person should be able to "roll" on paint in a room that size on 3 walls in about 2-3 hours.

If everything is prepared: taped, plastic on floor, paint, rollers, brushes ready.  I would estimate it taking no more than 12 hours.

The drying can be sped up by putting a fan in the door way to keep the air moving.
