I need to sew a hem by hand, what sort of stitching should I use.

  1. Depends entirely on the effect you're after and the amount of elasticity you need in the hem.  Whipstitch is fast and dirty <g>, catch stitch and blind slipstitch are the usual suspects, but I prefer herringbone for a lot of hems.

    What are you hemming?  The design of the garment and the type of fabric both influence the choice of stitch for hemming.  Many modern hems are simply turned and topstitched, then trimmed.  This is especially true with knits.

  3. There are several hand st for hems and here is a video to demonstrate the whip stitch.

  4. Whip stitch and don't go all the way through the fabric , just on the back side of the hem ;)))
