I just hatched my black racers snakes eggs(2). this is the first time she was bred. I got the babys drinking water but they will not eat at all. Does anyone have any advice on what to try and feed them? ... P.S. they are way more agressive than their parents so im not going to hand feed them like corn snakes.

  1. Give them time,

They will eventally eat They can be stressed the first few weeks, so just give them time.

Ask again if they dont in the next couple of days or just email me.

  2. You have to wait till they have their first skin shed before they will begin to eat. After the first shed, try pinkie mice, some may take earthworms, but most will stick to appropriately sized rodents. Dangle their food using tweezers if you are nervous about them. Their mouths are really too small to give much of a bite, if any bite at all.

BTW: Almost all newborn snakes are very fast acting as it is their only form of self defense (the non-venomous types, that is.)

  3. Adult racers will eat anything: rodents, birds, eggs, snakes, lizards, frogs, and grasshoppers. Babies, however, can be a little more tricky to feed. I've found that they often won't take pinky mice until they're a little older. Small frogs work great. And believe it or not, babies will eat crickets. I had some baby yellow bellied racers once and they went crazy for crickets. I've read on kingsnake.com that alot of people get them to eat pinky mice by smashing up a cricket and trubbing it on the mouse. I've done it by rubbing frog slime on pinkies. Also, they won't eat until they've had their first shed and sometimes longer. It's not unusual for them to go a month or two before they accept their first meal.  Kingsnake.com actually has a racer forum and I'm sure you'll be able to get some good tips. Here it is:
