Question:

Help or reasons why I have a very high fuel consumption?

I have a 2002 subaru Gx hatchback. Filled up recently with the premium high octane petrol stuff, well my dad did. Anyway i only got 300km on a full tank. I don't know the fuel tank size, but 300km still seems WAY to low. Any help appreciated.

  1. have you considered that petrol prices have gone up so you wont be getting as much yeild per litre per buck like you used to

    other contributers are

    wheel alignment, underinflated tyres, obese passengers and more weight, higher sloping roads, faster "pedal to the metal" type of driving.

    do u have kids? if u have a young teenager then he/she may be taking it out on joyrides when you are sound asleep with your hubby.

  2. You know by using a richer fuel and all that could of caused the system to force certain impurities into the gas filter or fuel injectors or the gas being not recommended being used caused the engine to improperly burn fuel off.

    I'd try some gas treament after burning off the fuel in there and then bec of the vehicles age and the gas consumption problem I';d change the gas filter to be sure it's not faulty, plus they should be changed every yr really anyways.

    Be sure to give the vehicle a bit of a tune up check, plus check the air filter and pcv valve , plus you might want to clean the throttle body with special spray.

    Make sure all fluid levels are correct under hood and test the antifreeze bec that affects also how the engine performs.

    Even a corroded or rusty or faulty connection going to the battery or starter or alternator or engine ground or any sensor or electronic device can cause the engine to run improperly in some way.

    That aged vehicle probably needs the electrical charging system's circuit over hauled and that could be part of the problem you're having now.You'll need to check, for corrusion or rust and maybe clean the system with a small file, fine sandpaper , small wire brushes the battery, starter, alternator posts, connections and connectors, plus the engine block ground, clean or replace any and all ground wires,plus use new screws etc in connecting the grounds ,and create new ground wires or ground connections when their too rusty etc to remove.If you want to spend the time it's well worth it to take out the relays , and fuses with the battery disconnected and clean their connectors, especially any fuses etc located under the hood. Plus clean , re-gap or change the spark plugs , clean the connectors  inside the spark plug wires with a flat head small screwdriver, just be careful not to scrape the wire itself inside the connectors and be sure to clean the ignition coil connectors too.Plus I highly recommend changing the gas filter especially if you've not been changing it on a yrly basis.

    Don't even worry about any old grounds if you made up new ones as long as their not in the way and you've it done right.

    Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way it might not be a bad idea to pick up a service manual  for that vehicle. I'd highly recommend that any vehicle that is over 5 yrs old have these types of over hauls to help maintain the system.Plus you'd be amased how doing these types of things really help the whole vehicles lighting , dash and gage system , especially how it starts up and charges battery.

Well yes I agree it does seem low, it only has a 5o ltr tank but is meant to get 10litres per 100kms, so you should around 500kms out of a tank unless your thrashing the c**p out of it, so seeing your only getting 300 and only doing 60 - 80 km ph it seems like there is something wrong, could be alot of things, might just be air/fuel mixture is way out, I would take it in for a check at your local Subaru Dealer and tell them , sure you havnt got a petrol leak somehwhere? lol.Anyway its not right so get it checked out.

  4. It probably wasn't completely filled. IE, the bowser clicked off from splashback instead of a full tank.

  5. Bring your car into a service area and tune it up.

    Don't load heavy things into your car.

    Use the air-conditioning wisely.

    Avoid frequent braking.

    Avoid peak-hour traffic where you have to stay stationery for a long time.

    Use the right petrol.

    Make sure the tyres are properly inflated.

    Use Public Transport instead of your car.

    You might want to consider:

    Changing from a petrol to a gas tank. Would cost a bit ( I really don't know) but the petrol savings are good.

Does the manufacturer of your vehicle require premium petrol?  If not, then you may harm the internal workings of your motor by doing so.  Your vehicle was designed to run best on whatever fuel requirement'ss, that is listed in owner's manual.  Why did dad put premium in yer tank?  If it was knocking, then check your timing or knock sensor.

  8. Was it highway driving you did or in the city? Do you ride the throtle if its a manual?
