I am having eye surgery on my right eye's muscle in september. (on my freakin b-day). I am having surgery b/c I have severe amblyopia (lazy eye). Is there anything that i need to be prepared for, or anything i need to do before the sugery? this is the first time ive had surgery so i could really use some help.

  1. Hi,

I've been through three similar surgeries.  There really is not much to do prior to the surgery other than the restrictions on eating and drinking just prior to it.

Here are some things that might help you in regarding what to expect.  It is probable that it will be an outpatient surgery so you should be able to go home afterwards (that is a good thing).  You might be given either a local or a general anesthtic - I've had both.  If you have the general, they will put you out and you'll just wake up in a groggy state.  You might also feel naseous but they will give you some medication to alleviate that if that is the case.   If you have the local, they won't put you out totally so you'll be somewhat aware of what is going on during the operation.  You won't be able to feel or see anything.

I never had much pain afterwards - just maybe for a day or so when I moved the eye.  However since my eye alignment changed each time I was really, really disoriented at first.  Depth perciption was off, felt dizzy and had double vision.  This went away after about a week but it was a frustrating process as there is not much you can do about it other than wait.

    I hope it goes well!
