  1. Most Jeep Cherokees have a 4.0 liter 6 cylinder engine.  If in good condition and you drive around 60 - 70 mph, you'll get around 23 mpg.  You'll need at least 20 gallons of gas to drive 460 highway miles.  At $4 a gallon that would cost you $80.

If you have to drive both city and highway, the average mileage drops a lot.  I average about 18 mpg, and at that mpg, you'll need about 25 gallons of gas, which translate to $100.

Any current Pontiac model will get better gas mileage than the Jeep.  Even an older v8 in good condition will get better gas mileage than the Jeep.

Whichever car you take, in order to maximize gas mileage, drive slow, don't use a/c (open the window), and make sure your tires are inflated properly.
