  1. Mountains in China (32d N / 113d E), close to central coasts. These are part of watershed between Yangtse & Hwang Ho river basins, with 77 peaks more than 1000m high, mostly above clouds. Created by the uplifting of sea in Mesozoic era, further eroded by glaciars during Quaternary era to shape stone pillar forests. A region of great natural scenic beauty often depicted in Chinese paintings. It is a UNESCO heritage (covering a hundred sq.km.or so) site. Because of its culural importance (painting, poetry etc) it is valued by Chinese, who can be expected to take good care of them.
