  1. Leavened bread (with yeast) generally is since it doesn't contain eggs.

You just look at the ingredients list when buying at the store.  Make sure all the oils are vegetable oils, and there are no eggs or milk.

When in doubt, you can buy bread at you local health food store.  They will tell you for sure if it's vegan or not.

And - since you're asking about something as basic as bread, it sounds to me like you're new at being a vegan.  I strongly urge you to do your research.  Being vegetarian or vegan isn't just about eliminating animal products from your diet.  It's about completely changing the way you eat so that you still get proper nutrition.  Again, the folks at the health food store can be a good resource (but there are lots of good books, too).

  2. Some is, some isn't.  Read the label.  French bread and sourdough bread generally are.  Wheat breads often have eggs or milk in them.

    Stick to Ezekiel bread.

  3. The final product is vegan if all of the ingredients are vegan.  Bread can go both ways.  Some breads have milk, whey, honey or less often, eggs.  Many breads have none of these.

Something you surely should have noticed by now is that every loaf of bread in your grocery store has an ingredient list on it.  Read some labels.

  4. Local grocery store.

You have GOT to read labels.  It is going to take you a long time to shop at first till you figure out brands you can eat.  *BUT* don't make the mistake of thinking that things always stay the same and that a company will not make changes and tell you about it in big letters on the package - you have to keep checking.  "Morningstar" comes to mind and makes the point.  They now use eggs in their products where they never used to at all previously (before they were bought out).

If all else fails - look for sourdough bread.  Totally vegetarian/vegan - no animal products at all in the making of such bread.  *BUT* - I still would read the label - -- just to be on the safe side.  :)

  5. lol

  6. Bread can be vegan yes! If you have a Trader Joe's in your area they carry a lot of good vegan breads!!

  7. PETA issues aside, they have a good resource for finding vegan items in the grocery store that are not usually seen as vegan such as Sunbeam Bread: http://www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/Ve...

  8. Different types of bread are and others aren't. YOu have to check the label of everything these days to see whats in it!
