  1. Bees have a 'collar' made from tiny hairs which catches pollen from the flowers while they go for the nectar. That pollen is then transferred when the bee goes on to the next flower. Pollen. Pollinating. get it?

  2. Pollination is the transfering of pollen from the anther of the male flower or male part of the flower to the stigma of the pistil of the female flower or female part of the flower.  The pollen then "germinates" and grows a pollen tube down into the ovary of the plant (through the pistil) and fertilizes the egg in the ovary.  Pollen is like sperm in animals....it fertilizes the eggs in the female part of the plant.

See the diagram of the flower below for an illustration of the flower parts.  This diagram shows a flower with both male (anther) and female parts (pistil, stigma, ovary).

  3. Pollinate means to move the male pollen from the anther to the female pistil. Then the flower can make the seed for the new plant. Bees and small birds and moths and butterflies as well as other insects andthe wind help in pollinating. Some plants are self pollinating because they have the male and female parts in the same flower. Others like corn have them in separate places.(The silk is the male and the ear is the female) Others have male and female on separate trees.(Holly)
