Help please. i am trying to load songs onto my mp4 player but i cant get it to work. i plugged it

i am trying to load songs onto my mp4 player but i cant get it to work. i plugged it up like it said to my pc and then to the usb. do i need to let it charge over night because i can't even get the black screen to come off and show the play screen.
1. it will come on
2. won't do anything other than a black screen
3. its been charged overnight
4. i have download i think 8 songs and it says it did it but it wont go past the black screen.
