One of my finches laid eggs and a baby finch hatched a few days ago, but there are still eggs in there, but I think its past the time for the eggs to hatch ( and something is starting to smell in my room in the cage :( so i think it might be time to take the dud eggs out)

but im not sure how to go about that

I would have to take the baby out in order to reach the eggs, seeing as though hes sitting right next to him

and i dont want to hurt him so im not sure what to do

help?

  1. Sometimes eggs do hatch a couple of days after the other eggs has hatched.  However, if you think the eggs has gone bad then do remove it.

I'm assuming the finches are in a basket nest.  If so, then chances are entrance is pretty small and it will be hard for you to move the bad eggs out with your hand.  DON'T USE A TONG!  You might end up breaking the eggs in the nest.

What you need is a small spoon.  All you have to do is stick the spoon in and gently scope out the eggs.  The spoon should be small enough that you can remove the eggs without having to remove or touch the chick(s).

  2. ask your mom

get some tongs or salad serving things and reach in there

or if they are small eggs use big tweasers

  3. Just be very careful. You dont want him around rotten eggs either as they can have nasty bacteria and sometimes weep or break. If need be pick the baby up very gently and place him in a little bowl with tissue then put in a box just incase he decides to move around you dont want him falling. Move as quick as you can and take bad eggs out. You can flash a light through them to see if they are fertile. then put baby back in asap right where he was. Mother finch will be fine with it as they have a bad sense of smell its a old wives tale that they wont accept babies if human touches them so dont worry. If you can just reach around him and take out. Trust me mom birds sits onhim and they are ok. Good luck and take a deep breath and relax it will be ok. :)

  4. put a flashlight over the eggs and if there is red viens  then there is a chick in there if there is nothing take em out

  5. It's only been a few days and eggs hatch every few days so I think you should hold off and see if more hatch if not just gently take them out

  6. Just Take the eggs out! Dont take the baby out just manuver around him. if you have to take him out scoop him up in your hands... just do it VERY carefully and put him in a safe place. remove the eggs and carefully put him back...make sure it stays warm though!!
