there are four solutions that needed to be identifies as which...

0.1M HCI, 0.01M HCI, 0.1M NaOH and water.

theory.methly orange is pink at pH less than 3 and yellow at pH greater than 4.

Phenolphthalein is an indicator that changes from colourless at pH less than 8 to pink at pH greater than 10. What would most likely be expected if phenolphthalein was used instead of methyle orange to identify the four solution?

  1. You'd need to find out the pH of all the solutions then write down the differences in accuracies. It depends on the pH of the solutions but you may say it would become less/more accurate as it is further away from the average pH of the solutions

  2. lower pH = stronger acid.

lowest pH 0.1M HCI (acid) < 0.01M HCI (acid) < Water (Ph 7) < 0.1M NaOH (base) highest pH

If you use phenolphthalein, the three first solutions are colourless.

only NaOH has the opportunity to bacome pink (it shows the higher pH's).

Methylorange will show the lower pH's.
