  1. It is impossible to answer that question with an exact, number, or anywhere near. Your question needs to specify what city or what time period.

Here's a brief history of urban sprawl in the US:

Urban Sprawl typically develops through a hastey urban development durring periods of fast population or economic growth. In the late 1940's and 50's in the US, urban sprawl began to develop, due to the ease of long-distance travel with the readilly available automobile. Americans began to move far away from where they worked, because it was now easy to live in the suburbs and work in the city.

In 1956, the Interstate highway system first opened in the US, and as a result, small, quickly built commercial villages pop up along side. These motels, resturaunts and shopping centers took up much more space and poorly built roads went up around them, leading to an increase in urban sprawl.

At this point, in suburbs in the US, a new house was going up every 17 minutes. The development of urban sprawl was at it's peak. Over 25% of US citizens lived in the suburbs by 1956.

In the 90's there was a slight trend of people who once lived in the suburbs to go back to the cities. Also at this time, shopping centers were redeveloped, making better use of the space they took up. The development of urban sprawl has slowed down a lot since the 1950's
