Help please with this ratio question.?

if a:b=3:17 what is a if b is 102.can you look at the way i set this up and tell me if im on the right track. ok a/b=3/17 than thats where i get lost.or do i cross multiply.thanks yahoo

to get 102, you multiply 17 by 6

so you do the same to A

3 x 6 = 18

3:17 = 18:102

17a=306

/17   /17

a=18

You are on the right track.  Here's how to set up the ratio:

3/17 = a/102.

Now cross multiply to find "a."

17a = 306

a = 306/17

a = 18
