What happen to metal object when left outside:

Metal, if not protected, will be oxidised and form oxide (which we call rust). Some example are

Iron, Aluminium (found in various thing) rust (especially fast when in water) with oxygen around like this

Fe + O2 -> Fe2O3...

To prevent that, we use paint, oil, ... to protect them from rusting
