Is there any money in plumbing now a days

A friend of mine is a plumber and makes a great living. His niche is that he's an emergency on-call plumber for a bunch of bars and restaurants. They basically pay him some token amount to be on call for them all the time. Then, when he comes out, he's the exclusive plumber for the establishment.

Also, consider learning how to do tile work. A lot of times, people need plumbers for leaks in the bathroom, which can require removing shower enclosures or whatever. And, if it's a tile enclosure, it all has to be rebuilt. So, you get the job of doing the plumbing work and redoing the tile.

i am in business for myself plumbing, and made over $130,000 last year (net profit).  i work out of my garage (no room for cars in there anymore!) and charge $80/hour, which is the going rate here.

Service work is a bit dirtier, but it pays much better, and gets a good name for yourself.  I had troubles getting started in the trade, as i lived in a small town, and no plumbers wanted to hire a greenhorn.  

try the city.  larger companies that do commercial and industrial construction always need laborers, and it's a good way to get your first year of apprenticeship.  once you've been to school, doors will start to open up.  residential construction is a bit more cut-throat i found.  i saw a lot of guys get fired for 1 mistake, because there were so many guys that could do the job instead.

i worked for 5 different companies through my apprenticeship, to make sure i got the experience i needed to work for myself.  if you do enter the trade, don't allow yourself to be pidgeon-holed.  try to get a broad knowledge of the trade.  this will make you indespensible, so if layoffs come, they will get rid of the guys who only know a couple aspects of the trade, and keep the well rounded guys.  it will pay off in the end.

any trade work is good work to get into, and it pays good money, call local unions to see when an apprenticship program starts

easy to get into an aprenticship for plumbing.  good money to be made in new home construction,   much more to be made if you are go into repair and remodeling.
