HI There I have a 6 day old pup how yesterday stopped eating and was breathing slighlty less smooth than it should. It has been to the vet this morning and he thought it was gas. I have been feeding him every 1-2 hours and he is kept warm. He has gotten worse and the vet seems to think it is something called fading puppy syndrome which there is not much you can do.

He seems it breath in hold it like he is pushing and then releases. I have been giving him warm baths and massagin his abdomen. I have been massaging his r****m with a warm cloth to stimulate faeces. He has not pooed that I know of for 12 hours.

Please has anyone had this and if so what do you recommend.

I asked the vet should I euthenase him and he said no some come out of it with a bit of hard work.

Please help I dont believe I have much time

  1. We had three pups that were two weeks old come down with fading puppy syndrome, one after the other, we had to tube feed every 2 hours & finaly after 24 hours two of the three were back to their normal selves, sadly we lost one.

Keep trying with the massaging, you can also try burping him after feeding, a couple of our pups needed this for a few weeks until they learnt to do it themselves, we had to rear 8 lil dalmatians as mum got mastitis etc & had to be seperated from them at 4 days old. We learnt a lot.

Instead of having him in bed with you, to be more careful put him into a box with a hot water bottle or heating pad under some towls to keep him worm.

Good luck with your lil one, hop he pulls through.

  2. Massage their heart when they start to slow down breathing!! Also try and keep him with his litter mates if what he has is not contagious!

I hope he will be ok! most puppies are fighter so hopefully he will come out of it!

  3. bring him to the vet ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The vet will take care of it, if you ask them too even if their recommendation is to euthanize.  You don't have to do that, you just have to give it the right treatment.

6 day old pup?  Did you breed this litter?  Try putting another dog beside it like they do for twins to help bring them back.

  4. mothers milk gives puppy an important immunity while his young.his mom will have more chance of feeding him then u. get his bros and sisters next to him, or put him on the place other pups were eating, so he could feel worm and maybe h**l try to eat.

    im so sorry, man

  5. How sad - feel so sorry for you

    :-(

If the little guys in pain, it's probably best to euthenase unfortunately

  6. Fading Puppy is just when a pup fails to thrive even under the best of situations.

Look here this may help you with the pup.

Also feed the pup every 2 hours and burp the pup too just like you would a new born baby. Then try to stimulate the pup to poo. I would not keep giving the pup warm baths.  I see no purpose in this.  If your keep the pup warm and dry and clean that is all that is necessary.

If your bottle feeding and the pup is taking in enough nourishment then that's fine.  Did the vet discuss tube feeding the pup with you??

Also are you feeding the pup puppy replacement forumla?  Did the vet tell you anything about adding dark Kayro syrup to it to aid in the the pup pooing?

Right now I would be more concerned about the breathing then the pooping.

ADD:  This is not about fadding puppy but it is a good way to get the little pup more allert and more with it.  I have used this with all my pups and found it to be very good.  Any time you can give any pup a jump start I feel is a great thing.

Also are you making a big batch of puppy formula or are you feeding the already prepaired formula. I'll check back or you can e-mail me ok.

  7. where is the puppies mum? the puppy needs to have the mothers milk for the first week or so to give it vital anti-bodies needed to survive and beat off any infections that might come. other than letting it stay with its mum and drink from her teet i dont know what else to suggest. i hope it gets better.

  8. The pup needs its mothers milk because the milk from the mother has an important substance in it to help the puppies grow up healthy. Try to get him to nurse because this might help him get through whatever he's going through. If he doesn't get any better then I would keep taking the pup to the vet and get the vet to do whatever he needs to do to make him better. Follow his instructions at all times. Be strong, be positive, and keep on doing what you do, because I'm sure if you work hard enough to save this pups life, you will most likely come out with positive results, however, if you have negative results, then you have done the best you can possibly do. I wish you the best of luck with the mom and pups.

  9. Any possibility this puppy has been exposed to Kennel Cough?  I have had shall we say an experience of a litter who went down with this - puppy one faded at around 8/9 days and the rest of the litter went down about a week later, and two more died.  Finally another dog in the house, who also caught this wretched bug (we won't go into how it got into the house at that time of all times) gave blood from which plasma was extracted and injected into the remaining 8 puppies.  This was in the hope the antibodies in the plasma would be transferred to the puppies and kick in their immune system (hope that's right, I'm no vet). They were given oxygen when needed, and a tent was put over the box with ??? (not sure so I won't say) put in to help break up the mucus.  It was touch and go, but they survived!

Suggest you run this idea past your vet although you may not have a suitable candidate to give the blood?

Keeping fingers crossed because watching them fade (and hearing them too) is heartbreaking.

PS I should have said this plasma transfusion remedy can work with fading puppies, regardless of whether they have KC or not!
