I want to buy a quality road bike because I have really been getting into riding and want to continue. I want to buy one like a bianchi, but I don't know where to start. I'm about 5'6 and weigh between 130 and 140. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't I have to have a specific frame size? or something like that?

  1. Trek is one of the few companies out there with a complete line of bicycles for women.  WSD - Women Specific Design and they are American made at least some are.  Watch out for cheap components try to get a carbon fork and at least 105 but keep in mind that your budget needs to allow for some nice shorts and gloves and helmet and shoes, and pedals.  I always recommend to my friends that they get fitted for a bike by someone at the shop then go to another shop and get fitted again.  Some (not all) will put you on a bike just because it is close enough and they have a few extra.  I am 5'7" but I am much more comfortable on a bigger bike which allows me to stretch out more and get more from my leg stroke.  I am close to hyper extension but not quite.  Other riders like to be right on the dime so they can be more Ario-dynamic.  I don't plan to race just ride.  My advice is that you get fitted, and stay in budget.

  3. Yes you need a specific frame size. It will be based on your inseam and several other major body measurements then the fit will be fine tuned specifically to your body. Ideally this will be done at your local bike shop. Assuming you buy a bike from them the fitting will not cost anything extra.

If you truly want a quality bike, do not shop at a big box sporting goods or department store. You need to go to a dedicated specialty shop. That doesn't mean everything they sell will cost $$$$ but it does mean they know the difference between $ and $$$$ and can help you decide what is right for your needs.

I'm not a big believer in women specific frames. Many frames today are 'compact' designs, meaning they have a sloping top tube similar to the old 'girls bike'. The main thing you should consider is a women specific saddle.

  4. Your best bet would be to head over to your local bike shop. They can set you up with the bike that's right for you. All the major manufacturers are pretty good quality-wise and they all have entry-level bikes.

The bike shop will get you fitted properly, which will make for a more comfortable ride. And most offer free tune-ups with the first 30 days. A shop near me offers free tune-ups for a year with each new bike purchased.
