Help...rabbit question?

Hi. I'm thinking about getting a rabbit and I want to know the sweetest breeds and their average lifespans. And I also want to know if I could house train one. I would keep it in my room mostly and there are no wires or things it could chew on. My sister had a male bunny and he died and then she got a female and the female was very mean. Should I get a male then. And do the males mark their territory? Sorry for all the questions and personal experience on these would be great too. Thanks a lot.

  1. i ditto Allisha!  great info!

i have two house rabbits that are both spayed/neutered.  they are not easy, low-maintenance pets.  the aggression your sister experienced was most likely hormone related if the rabbit was not spayed.  both males and females will mark territory if not altered.

  2. Honestly, it's not a breed thing but more of an individual rabbit thing.  I have a mini rex who prefers his space, and my friend has one who loves to cuddle.  It completely depends on the rabbit.

Rabbits can be house trained.  It's generally easier to house train a rabbit that has been spayed/neutered.  This surgery will also make for a longer, healthier life for your rabbit by eliminating or reducing the risk for many diseases and cancers.  Even better, altering a rabbit can reduce territorial aggression and marking.

The entire House Rabbit Society page has fantastic information on rabbit care and behaviour.  I would definitely suggest reading through it to brush up on your rabbit knowledge before you get a rabbit.

Also, please consider adopting as there are many sweet rabbits in shelters waiting for homes.  Adopting an adult rabbit will also give you a better idea of their personality.  I got my lop, Lucky, when he was a baby and he was quite sweet and easy to handle.  As an adult he's a bit skittish and hates to be held.

  3. well i have a drawf bunny and i love her! but i dont think she can be housed trained.

maybe you should get a holland lop! they are medium sized bunnies that come in many differnt colors.

you can buy a litter pan and train it there.

but if your keeping in in you room make sure you have a cage still or something because it needs to have its own space.

like us people have rooms. it would be likes its room.

also holland lops live till there teen years.

females will usually only be mean if they were mistreated with there previous owner or they think they are pregnat. they pull out there hair for a nest. make sure you get all the same gender if you get 2 unless you fix them because they will breed quickly.

your sisters bunny could be mean because it wasnt handled by people.

your bunny will probly chew the carpet to so i wouldnt suggest leaving it out in your room. it will chew on furniture and everything.

sorry my answer is not organzied.

    hope this helps!

  4. In my experience, the best and sweetest ones are Male Dutch Rabbits. They're not as 'cute' as lop or lion head, but much more friendly. They do mark their territory, but you can get them neutured to stop this, which you should do anyway- it's better for their health.

Female rabbits tend to be more aggressive when they hit puberty- it is NOTHING to do with ill treatment or not being handled, it's just their hormones.
