line 8 columns 11 and 12. I can make out that it is his father and he is going to Ohio, but I can;t read the father's name (Antonio?) nor the city he is travelling to. The best I get on the city is Coutow. There is a Choctaw Lake in Madison County but there definately is not an H in there.

and line 8 column 18 on this one. I get Erie, Pennsylvania and 306 South but not what is in between.

  1. The passenger's name was FRANCESCO RUSSO, and he was on the SS Oceania that stopped at Ellis Island on May 13, 1912. At least that is the listing shown at www.ellisisland.org. That shows his father was Antonio and was in Ohio (possibly CANTON?? Wikipedia's listing of Ohio cities did not show a Coutow, or even a Carbon--which I thought might be possible at first), living with a brother GIOVANNI RUSSO at 306 Cherry Street.

However, on this listing at www.ancestry.com

    New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957

    Name: Antonio Russo

    Arrival Date: 13 May 1912

    Estimated Birth Year: abt 1894

    Age: 18

    Gender: Male

    Port of Departure: Napoli

    Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)

    Ship Name: Oceania

Port of Arrival: New York, New York

    Nativity: Italy

    Line: 15

    Microfilm Serial: T715

    Microfilm Roll: T715_1859

    Birth Location: Italy

    Page Number: 156

This listing for Francesco doesn't agree at all (Antonio could NOT be his father and be 11 years YOUNGER):

    Name: Francesco Russo

    Arrival Date: 13 May 1912

    Estimated Birth Year: abt 1883

    Age: 29

    Gender: Male

    Port of Departure: Napoli

    Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)

    Ship Name: Oceania

Port of Arrival: New York, New York

    Nativity: Italy

    Line: 7

    Microfilm Serial: T715

    Microfilm Roll: T715_1859

    Birth Location: Italy

    Birth Location Other: bemaldi

    Page Number: 48

(It is the same ship and arrival date).

Note age on this listing for Francesco--same ship/arrival date:

    Name: Francesco Russo

    Arrival Date: 13 May 1912

    Estimated Birth Year: abt 1869

Age: 43  (COULD be Antonio's father, if true)

    Gender: Male

    Ship Name: Oceania

On your second link above, it says Antonio and/or Francesco are going to Ohio to brother "Giovanni Russo, living at 306 South Cherry Street, in possibly Canton, Ohio." Of course, how many Antonios and Francescos there were on that ship is anyone's guess.

  2. brother Giovanni for the second maybe.

  3. This is as near as I think I got it.  Handwriting has always been difficult at times to read from older records.  Father's name is probably Antonio, but I also saw Autocus and Autocio, but neither of those make any sense, so you are probably correct.  I too saw Coutow as the city.  The second one is Huron 438, brother Giovanni.  Sorry I could not be of better help, but it is hard to read.

  4. In column 11 (The name of nearest relative in country of whence alien came.) Francesco Russo's father's name is listed as Antonio, which signifies that his father is still in Italy.

In column 12, Francesco's final destination is Canton, OH

In column 18, he was going to his brother,

    Giovanni Russo

    306 South Cherry St

    Canton, OH

The Erie, PA info is for the person on line 7.

Don't know why the manifests do this, but they used to have me confused, too.
