  1. Quite a scary experience!  First, call the police.  It doesn't matter that the person has already run off, you should still file a report.  Sometimes people worry that they're calling the police for no real reason, and that the police will be irritated.  That's not the case!!!  So please call.  Your town should have a non-emergency # so you don't have to call 911.  But if for some reason you can't find the #, you could call 911, especially because you are still frightened.

It's great that you have an alarm that works, and now you know that it served its purpose!  You can ask the police or your local neighborhood association (if you have one) about how to do a home security check, to make sure that aside from your alarm your house is secure.  This would include making sure you have good window locks, a good front and back door deadlock, and even making sure your basement windows are locked tight.  Don't forget to make sure that you have a porch light on at night and that your back yard is also lit by a light, to deter any potential burglars.  The good thing is that the chances of this person coming back and trying your home again are low since they now know you have an alarm.

Call a friend to come stay with you if you are still nervous (which would make sense after something scary like that happens!).

  2. Call the police!  They can check things out and make suggestions..... and do fingerprints.... and have it on record that there was an attempted break in.

Make sure all doors and windows are locked.

Leave outside lights on..... buglers don't like lights.....

Get a persnickety little dog that barks at everyone!

Get a friend, relative or neighbor to park a vehicle in your driveway... and have a few of them do it from time to time.

Invite relatives or friends to visit for a day or two from time to time.

The idea is to change your normal patterns so if you are being watched......... they can't figure your pattern out!  They will give up and go elsewhere.

  3. call the police

  4. I'm not sure if the show is still on, but there's this show on The Discovery Channel that was about how a person could better protect themselves against robbers.  If you can't find the show on Discovery, you could probably find it on Google or YouTube.

Best of luck with everything!  I hope you'll be safe in the future :)

  5. Call the police.  Make sure all your doors and windows are locked, keep the alarm on.  If you would feel better, have a friend come and stay with you until you are more comfortable being in your own home.  I truly am sorry this happened to you.  I was beaten, stabbed and abducted from my home in 1981, it left me with permanent injuries.  This was a home invasion robbery.
