So I am getting married in June 09. We are prob using the penthouse at my fiance's company. The view is already beautiful but I want to transform it. There is going to be a cocktail reception and dancing. I was thinking of lounge and fun various seating styles, chairs and colored lighting (orange, cream......???) and maybe draped fabric on the ceiling or walls/wall. I am very crafty and would like to do all the decor and flowers myself ( with my team ; ) but I really dont know much about this area of decor. How would I secure things like fabric and paper lanterns without hurting the walls. Any Ideas???!?! Thanks in advance.

  1. sky blue background with white flowers will be nice

  2. An older friend recetly got married and when I went, she had bought some poles from Home Depot or Lowe's and fit them from one side of the ceiling to the other. Then, she bought some mesh-y fabric and draped them across the mutiple poles. It looked lovely! Then, she used a florescent light bulb under an orange lamp shade on the sides of the walls. For some modern arrangements go here:

    This also looks amazing:

  3. My fiance and I are having a cocktail reception too, in June '10. Its going to be a late evening (8pm) reception. A really cool idea that I am thinking of doing is getting some LED balloons that light up: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/balloonlig... . Also, for favors, I want to give out glowing cocktail stirrers http://www.windycitynovelties.com/EPaySo...

Now that I think about it, this is going to look more like a Rave than a wedding reception, LoL. But who doesnt love things that light up?!

  4. The location sounds FAB!  The lounge theme is so "IN", it will be a great event!

There is a reason that "event designers" get paid a lot of money, and this is why:

You will not be allowed to attach items to the wall - this will limit your decor tremendously.

Event designers have actual skeletons they set up around the room to accommodate fabric, there is a lot of work involved, for a Bride and bridal party it would take you about a week and that is if you had the correct supplies.  Even a crew who does this every weekend, it can take days!  Even wispy fabric is heavy when you are covering a lot of space - do you really want the risk of an entire wall of fabric coming down on your guests?  I guarantee it will happen if it isn't done professionally.

Also, keep in mind that renting lounge furniture is now a big business - ie really expensive.   You will need time for delivery and set-up at least 1 day of not more.  Lighting is probably the easiest thing to do, but you will have to get creative with extension cords, and taping down wires so no one trips on them!

I just want to show you that logistically your Wedding can happen, but it needs professional help!   I would start by hiring a Wedding Consultant that specializes in transforming spaces - there is a difference!  If you have a substantial budget then give her your dream Wedding, a budget and let her do all the work!  She will ensure everything is done correctly on time and on budget.  You just have to worry about getting there and having fun - which is what it's really about!

I don't want to discourage you, but a "do-it-yourself-bride" generally ends up on the Bridezilla show, hating her Wedding and everyone hating her..........
