  1. Before you start, I suggest you go to the store and buy a couple of decoration magazines. Sure, you may like alot of different styles, but since you are going to have to live with it, this is a wise first step.

Even a Sears or Penny's catalogue will be able to provide some variety and as you look, tear out the pages that you like the best. After doing this for a few weeks go back and look at what you have collected, you will discover that you repeatedly choose more of one style than others.

This is your place to start. Now you have an idea of what you prefere.

One place you can purchase furniture ect. inexpensively is www.overstock.com

A versitle theme is garden theme. You can use wicker ( which is easy to carry and move) and buy it inexpensively at stores that sell garden furniture. Also plants, real or silk in my opinion are a good investment and look great everywhere.

If you are trying to make a small room look larger, use lighter colors.

A classic trick are mirrors, any place you have a mirror, it should reflect a window, or a pretty area of the room, even a book case.

Place either a floor lamp or a table and table lamp in front of or underneath the mirror. Put a pretty, large real or green silk plant in front of the mirror with the lamp,  when the lamp is on this will cause a shadow of the plant to appear on the ceiling and surrounding wall and is very attractive. This can make your room look much bigger.

Also brass & glass keeps a room from appearing cluttered, especially if it is small. So brass colored lamps, tables ect.

The garden theme can be adapted for your bathroom if you are also redecorating that room too. I like "Neptunes Garden"  and using vintage fish wall pockets with their bubbles, mermaids, pieces of coral,

A fun place to look for things like that are aquarium/fish stores.

I also like the 1960's beads to hang in front of  your tub. You can use a clear shower curtain and put blue and green beads in front of it,

If  you have a shower door, I would still figure out a way to hang beads on the outside of the door, even a hot glue gun.(probably a dot of glue under every 4th bead or so)

You could paint a mermaid on the toilet seat, or an octipus.

Look at kids coloring books of Disney themes like The little mermaid or other  ocean/sea themes. Don't forget sea  horses. The images in the coloring book can be used as a guide for your own art.

I love the old 50's-60's clothes hampers and such, these can be found at thrift shops.

The garden theme can include lattice for the cieling or a wall. You can include a small bubbling fountain. Just walk through the garden shop or a nursery  or of a any store that sells garden stuff, ACE, Home Depot, Lowes.

  2. Find the things you love as inspiration, it could be a painting, a rug or even a lamp. Decorate around the piece, finding colors and furnishings to compliment. I recently designed a master bedroom in1920's Hollywood Glam by using table lamps as my jumping-off point. It turned out wonderful.  Remember to pick the items that you love and have fun!

  3. there's a lot of themes you could do, depends on your style and the feeling you want for the room and sometimes your budget.

a beach theme with sandy colors, pale blues/greens, creams/whites. kinda gives a peaceful, relaxing feel. all you really need is paint, furniture in the right colors and maybe some shells/sand/rocks/postcards/pictures etc you've collected from the beach.

tropical: bright colors together, like orange and teal, with reds, yellows, greens,  natural bright colors that you see on tropical locations. add some tropical plants, mosquito netting to complete the look. or you could go for a more muted color scheme with an island theme, just use pale blues, greens, beige, yellow, orange. add natural woods too

world theme: use items you've collected on your travels and use traditional colors from those countries. choose a specific country or try to combine a few. also if you haven't traveled, look around 2nd hand stores/ thrift stores, furniture stores for items that look like they're from another country
