  1. BCA_Rerack or Spot it- at the option of the other player  PRO RULES now APA Go for it

  2. If you make the 8 ball in on the break, you win.  Any other time you lose.  Making the 8 ball in on the break is rare.  I've been playing for more than 15 years, and have only done it twice

  3. What you most likely saw was an IPT match.  The International Pool Tour made a few modifications to world-standardized rules.  One of them was making the 8-ball on the break a win.  Under BCA (Billiard Congress of America) rules, an 8-ball on the break is neither a win nor a loss.  The breaker has the option of spotting the 8-ball on the foot spot or having a re-rack.  It's possible that another organization has it as a loss of game, but I can't speak knowledgeably about that.  The BCA is the American representative of the WPA (World Pool-Billiard Association) so these are in fact world-standardized rules.  The whole purpose of 8-ball is to pocket all of one group before pocketing the 8-ball, therefore an 8-ball pocketed on the break doesn't fulfill this key requirement.  Because it's an open break shot in 8-ball, the breaker should not be rewarded or penalized for pocketing the 8-ball.  Here's the appropriate rule copied from the website.

    -------

4.8   8-BALL POCKETED ON THE BREAK

If the 8-ball is pocketed on the break, breaker may ask for a re-rack or have the 8-ball spotted and continue shooting. If the breaker scratches while pocketing the 8-ball on the break, the incoming player has the option of a re-rack or having the 8-ball spotted and begin shooting with ball in hand behind the head string.

  4. yes you win

  5. Wether you play 8 ball on break wins or loses, If you are playig 15 years, and you only made it one time, that's not too many times. I have made it  times 10 that, by accident.

Apparentely, you, from what I can guess, were playing, 8 on the break wins. I have played in leagues, where the rules were mixed up, from all governing bodies, so in one we played in, the eight on the break use to win, the next year was conpletely different and opposite.

If You do not play proffessional, and play a lot in bars, you will find that most places, ar least where I live, the eight on the break wins. that is not according to rules that

"straight shooter" mentioned, and I agree with.

There was this one place that use to put 5$, for making the eight on the break, and it would cost the player shooting at it, .25 cents to go for the pot. If he didn't make ti, the .25 went into this pot, and it used to get up to 25-30 $, pot for .25c.

Most of the time I would win it, after they would build it up.

that was a long time ago.

But don't tell me that nobody ever seen that?. Especially the older guys. or won't anybody admit to it?

EDIT-Johnny, I would take that on, and your comment about having squat to do with the tourn match, is right on.

Soon as I get back to Chicago, I'll come down Texas, and look you up, as I find myself in Greece right now.

I was stationed in Ft. Hood texas, Killeen, Tex, not far from Austin, got some stories from there.for 20 months, that's a lomg time ago. so that kinda,

tells my age?, Nam era. 1st Armored division, 123rd maint

I thought you said somethig about texas, I May be wrong.

Nam Era, Not Nam. didn't send me.

EDIT-Vegas matt, I think it depends on what governing body's

rules you follow, APA rules, I believe state, that it is a win, where BCA rules are stated above by "Straight shooter",  who is also an official, and the rules are right there for you to read as stated. most bars I would say, may play 8 wins, as I have played it in some bars.

  6. Making the 8 on a legal break is never, ever a loss in any league or tournament. I don't know who taught you that, but get it out of your head, it's never right, not even using 'bar rules.'
