Just bought a Panasonic Plasma 42px70 & a HT System Panasonic PT850, bit confused over what cables I need so I can listen to the TV through the HT. Was under the impression I just need to connect the HT to the TV with a HDMI cable but I dont get any sound. But since searching for answers I read that I also need either either componont, Optical or SPDIF for sound as HDMI doesn't carry audio? Can someone please clarify as alos found other sources saying HDMI does carry audio!!

  1. HDMI should carry audio and video signals.

Are your getting video through your HDMI cable?

Maybe your have your HDMI wired incorrectly. Try changing the wires and see if this helps or not.

  2. Yes, HDMI can carry video and audio.

I suspect your TV is not accepting the audio.  Check your TV settings for the HDMI input so that it accepts sound.

    Here is the issue:

Some people run HDMI into a AV Receiver, then a HDMI cable to the TV for video.  They dont want the TV speakers to run at the same time as the external receiver.  This is why:

    - Some TV's have the option to not produce sound that comes in from the HDMI cable

    - Some receivers do not pass along the sound to the TV.

So start with the TV setup menu for audio options. If not , fire up the Panasonic setup menu to make sure it sends sound out through the HDMI cable.
