Help setting up router?

I was setting up my wireless router. We followed all of the directions & it didnt work. it was loading the settings & at about 80% it couldnt connect. we kept trying & it did the same thing at the same time. then we rewired it differently from the directions & it worked. we were securing it and nothing happened after that. i dont know whats wrong. we have a linksys WRT54G model.

  1. You don't state whether you're trying to configure the router wirelessly from your computer, or are connected to it with an ethernet cable. All initial configurations of the router should be performed with the computer connected by ethernet cable.

    You state that you're following all the instructions but, you haven't said whether you're connected to a DSL or cable modem. It makes a difference in trying to configure your router, properly.

    It is always best to configure your router to work from the ethernet connection first.(internet connection, networking, etc.) Then, go back and do the security encryption for the wireless, via ethernet connection. Then finally, disconnect ethernet cable, power cycle the network and try your wireless connection.
