A survey reported that 81 people, or 27 % of the group, were smokers. How many people were surveyed?

I don't want the answer; I want either you to remind me how to find this answer or provide a definite tutoring site.

Thanks.

  1. one whole is 100%

we know that 81 people is 27% so we need to find out what is 100%

one way to do this is to use equivalent fractions:

27/81 = 100/x  (solve for x to get your answer)

or i could figure out that if 27% is 81 people then i can find out what 9% is (or 3%, or 1%). if i know what 1% is then i can find out 100%

DON'T READ FURTHER UNLESS YOU WANT THE ANSWER

    if 81 people is 27% then 1/3 of that will be 9% (81/3 = 27)

so 27 people is 9% (just divided the 81 by 3 and the 27 by 3)

now that i know 9%, i can find out 1% (by dividing both numbers by 9)

    27/9 = 3 people

    so 1% is 3 people

now i can multiply that by 100 to get 100%

    so 100% = 300 people

  2. x= the number of people in the survey

    27% is 27/100.

    and 27% is also 81.

    81/x = 27/100

  3. x= number of peoples

    i would divide 81 people = 27% by 27 and get 3=1%

    Then multiply 3 time  100..

    hope i helped
