Are response essays opinionated? What exactly is expected?

in a response essay? To a film?

I have to write one tomorrow and there were no outlines or anything given :(

It simply means writing out your response and opinion. So you watch a film and then write down your response, such as how it made you feel, how well you though it was made, how good or bad the acting, what you thought were the movies weak points, what were it's strong points or how you think it could have been better.

Just respond to what you watch using your own words and opinions.

A response is a personal thing so that would explain why you were given no guidelines. Only you know how you respond to certain things.

Sometimes it depends on what the teacher wants. A response essay to a movie sounds like you are to write about what you think about the movie, the plot and how it related to the novel (if there is a novel). Just all that jazz. Compare and contrast. Also talk about the actors. they styl, expression, the portrayal of the character, etc etc.
