1. Hi...

metaphor is a type of usage in sentence... it shows relation between two things indirectly...

Example : He is a lion...

this is metaphor... bcoz it is understood tht the person is brave as a lion...

    hope u got it...

  2. my friend IS my rock.

(my friend is always there, supports me)

your friend can't possibly BE a rock, but he shares some of the same attributes a rock does, by being unyielding and firm.

a metaphor will always be written similar to this, although it may be more lengthy, but in essence it will always reference something IS something else, when it can not be.

The one that will always confuse you is probably the simile.

my friend is as comforting as a rock.

(This is more of an insult as...well....how comforting can a rock really be? It's hard and rough and does not yield)

a simile will always be written similar to this, although it may be more lengthy or use a differing comparison word. In essence it compares something to something else that gives a visual picture to someone else in a "colorful" way, usually using as or like in the phrase.

  3. Metaphor definitions:

    1. A figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in “A mighty fortress is our God.”

    2. Something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else; emblem; symbol.

    Metaphor examples:

    - How do you spend your time these days? That flat tire cost me an hour.

    - I've invested a lot of time in her.

    - I don't have enough time to spare for that. You're running out of time.

    - You need to budget your time.

    - Put aside aside some time for ping pong.

    - Is that worth your while?

    - Do you have much time left?

    - You don't use your time, profitably.

    - I lost a lot of time when I got sick.

    - Thank you for your time.

    2. Argument is War

    - Your claims are indefensible.

    - He attacked every weak point in my argument.

    - His criticisms were right on target.

    - I demolished his argument.

    - You disagree? Okay, shoot!
