Well I will be a senior in high school next year. I have not played volleybal lsince the 8th grade. But I want to play for my senior year of high school. i am an athlete I play basketball year round and plan on playing at the college level. But I was wondering what kind of things I need to work on. I would like to start. I am either a setter or a hitter. But I don't know proper technique for hitting. Our high school team isn't very good (record 2-18 last season). Does anyone have anything i could do before tryouts/open gym. Please help!!! I am 5'8'' btw.

  1. I started playing vball in 8th grade, too!!! The first thing you need to work on is footwork. Be quick on your feet, you'll need to be with rally scoring. Since you play basketball, that really shouldn't be a problem. Your team isn't that good, huh? Is there a leader? If there isn't, you should be. As far as training goes, I suggest you jog everyday and set a volleyball 500 times every night before you go to sleep. If you're going to be a setter, make sure you're the type of person that can take a lot of criticism. Setters get blamed for everything and anything when a team is suffering. Hey, good luck. I hope you make the team, have a winning season, and go on to win the state championship. It could happen.

  2. I know for sure that for hitting you need good timing and you need to make sure that your arm is back sort of far like you were to serve.  Hitting is like serving only you are jumping while doing it.  So my suggestion is one thing that my coach says to do is to practice "downballing" first which is hitting without jumping then when you have that down pact then you can practice with the jumping. TO practice downballing, you need a volleyball and a wall.  What you do is you hit the ball down to the ground (so that it bounces once before it hits the wall)  then once it hits the wall it should come back to you and you do it again.  You should do it for as many times needed and this should help you improve your spiking or "Hitting"

  3. practice, practice, practice.  Volleyball is fun.  it'll make you jump higher (useful in basketball).

  4. Don't be discouraged if you can't spike at first. I have excelled at other sports in my lifetime and have a rough time doing it. However I did become a much better baseball player by going to High School practice every day. They will be glad to teach you, if you have some ability you will make it. Get in shape.
