Help to identify strange thing growing in garage?!?

Today, when I was cleaning out the garage, I noticed a strange thing attached to a wooden rafter. At first, I thought it was a mushroom; it was bigger than a golf ball but smaller than a tennis ball, sort of beige in colour and when I gently touched it, it felt like a shell. I removed it by taking it off with a cloth around it, but was too scared to look inside! Instead, I disposed of it in a nearby wood. I live in the south east of England. Any ideas anyone?

maybe it was a mutilated snail?

you should of looked at it and taken a picture of it.

was it still alive? maybe its just a piece of hard fungus or mold that was growing.

Is it kindof dark and moist in that area where you found it?

It could just be a type of bacteria
