Question:

Help w/ Interview for teacher's position!

My husband has an interview tomorrow afternoon for a teaching position at a private school. He has no previous teaching experience but he has a degree in English/Journalism. They said 15 minutes of the interview would be an actual interview and the other 15 minutes would be where my husband has to teach a lesson to the principal. He's never done anything like this and has NO idea what to say/do. I'm guessing that because they know he has no experience, they will mostly be interested in his personality, confidence, and how well they think he can interact with the kids. He doesn't know what grade they are wanting him to teach either.

Any suggestions on what he should do the lesson plan on, and HOW he should do it?

  1. First, he needs to find out what grade level he is teaching.  A lesson on writing for kids in primary school is much different than a lesson for kids in middle school.

He will want to become familiar with state and national standards.  National standards can be found here:

I have been teaching for 15 years and many of them spent teaching Language Arts/English.  Feel free to send an e-mail for some suggestions...it is kind of hard when I don't know what grade level, but am more than happy to give something.

  2. How about a lesson on keeping your audiences attention, since that is what he should be doing with the principal.  Or have him do a little research and do a lesson on writing about the history of that school for a newspaper article.  I think the principal might be impressed and that would def make an impression:)

  3. i agree with the previous suggestions, but i'm confused as to how he can apply for a teaching position without being certified.  all teachers need to be "highly qualified" according to NCLB, which means the school and/or district could be open to lawsuits if your husband is hired.
