My friends and I are planning a trip to Mexico for Cinco Demio this year. We're all 19 and wanna party somewhere with a lot of college kids. We don't know what city to go to. I've never been to Mexico. We want a party city & party hotel! But don't know where to start.

  1. I think you mean 'the 5th of May' or Cinco de Mayo

That is not a big festival day in Mexico.  It's mostly a comercial creation from the US.

Better to do Spring Break or Mardi gras/Carnival

  2. You need to stay home and study. You are in college? You would never be able to find north to get back home again!

  3. In Cancun Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated but there is always a party going on at Dady'o, The City, BullDog, Senor Frogs, Coco Bongo to name a few.

  4. Well, us mexicans celebrate "La batalla de Puebla" on 5 de Mayo, not "Cinco de Mayo as such". The Batalla de Puebla was a famous battle where mexicans kicked american soldier tush during the mexican-american war in the mid 1800's.

We don't really celebrate anything like Mardi Grass esque party or anything exotic. It's just a freebee day from work and school to give mexicans an excuse to go to Acapulco for the weekend to get drunk.

You'd probably enjoy Cancun because it's so americanized and you only want to get drunk anyways, though I honestly have to say I'd rather have a more culturally stimulating time during my vacation. There's far more to Mexico than just getting a beer at a Señor Frogs restaurant/bar place in Cancun.

I'd rather go to the grutas in Oaxaca or just travelling through the villages in Oaxaca anyday (or maybe visit Cañón del Sumidero and Cuatro Cienagas in Chihuahua) than going to Cancun. Dunno, I'm not much of a fan of beaches filled with springbreakers that are bad tippers and do serious damage to the hotels.

  5. 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo) is a largely American creation.

It is an excuse for not-so-authentic Mexican restaurants to sell extra Corona and tacos.

If you're looking for a big Mexican celebration, you won't find it in Mexico.

If you are just looking for a place to party, try Cancun. It's very Americanized and commercial. You won't even know you've left the U.S. Sadly that seems to be a big draw for Americans.

If you actually want  just a little bit of a cultural experience where you can still find an American presence, go anywhere else. Try Cozumel or Acapulco.
