My daughter (7 yrs.old) recently got braces and they are only on her front top 2 and bottom 3 the rest are wires connecting them. The wires are giving her cuts on the side of her mouth. What can I do to help eliviate this? I've been giving her motrin for the pain but I want to put something on the wire or her mouth so it doesn't cut it anymore. I've heard some use of wax but can you use it on the wires? I can't usually get the wax to stick to anything?? Help!

  1. Wax!  Not the silicone stuff though, just the traditional stuff.  I had problems getting it to stick too but ive found that if you soften a blob of wax by sticking it under the hot water tap it makes it heaps stickier and easier to use.  You can use wax on the wires, just need to use a bigger blob of wax.  This will stop the cuts and you can put baby teething gel on the sores that are already there!

  2. Ask for some free wax then you need a massage it between your fingers till it softens a bit then stick it over the brace. Its messy though and you need to be sure she cleans her teeth thorougly afterwards.

  3. I had braces for about 2 years and there was always wire sticking out of the ends which my mouth got caught on, so, the dentist gave me wax to put on the wires to stop it. You can use it on the wires, i also had the problem with it not sticking. At first it would just fall off straight away, what you have to do is really push it on and use quite a bit - don't be sparse with it or it'll slide/come off.

    Good luck :)

  4. ask for the wax. used to have braces.thats what they gave me. you need to make sure the braces are dry before you stick them on.

  5. i had the same prob=] try asking her orthodontist for some wax & just stick it along the sides of her braces everyday. they give you an unlimited supply of it, so don't worry about that part. wax doesn't "stick" exactly, you have to like spread it over her wire & her teeth...i'm sorry, it's a little hard to explain. ask the orthodontist. or schedule an appointment & see if the orthodontist can fix anything that might be poking.

  6. I have braces and yes, you can put wax on the bracket, but im not sure about the wire... but even though she is in pain and is getting small cuts in her mouth, you should just leave it.. you get little bumps eventually which makes it stop hurting. If you put wax on, she'll be using it forever and i can tell you wax is a PAIN.

  7. BONJELA :)

Also, try warm salt water rinses.

    They really help.
