  1. Dope is a type of paint that causes the tissue to shrink and tighten when it dries. Clear is the color. Clear is lightest weight of all the colors, but not necessarily the prettiest.

You can buy it at hobby shops, or perhaps over the internet. You could google it.

Some toy places and department stores carry it, but most likely, need to go to a model shop.

  2. They are different young man......be careful...and do what the direction's say..........then if something goes wrong you might be able to take it back and get some help.............good luck.

  3. Pipe dope and model airplane dope are diferent.

  4. No they are not the same pipe joint compound is for sealing threads on piping and the dope is a clear liquid you paint onto the paper to make it stiff and long lasting. If you go to a model shop and look in the paints section may be your best option.

  5. No, they are different. This is what Wikipedia says:

Aircraft dope is a plasticised lacquer that is applied to fabric-coated aircraft to tauten, stiffen, adhere and provide protection to the skin material. Examples of such doping agents include Nitrocellulose, Cellulose acetate and Cellulose acetate butyrate. Liquid dopes are highly flammable.

Pipe dope is designed to dissolve PVC, not Cellulose.

You might want to look at an alternative (if you are using the dope for aircraft covering):

  6. Clear dope is used for the following:

Seal the balsa wood surfaces before applying the tissue paper

"glue" the tissue paper to the balsa skeleton

and then after you  shrink the paper, it is used to seal the tissue paper before applying your top coat color.

How do you shrink the tissue paper... after all the paper is on the plane, light brush it with water to get it damp, don't soak it, or use a spray bottle to wet the tissue.

You can buy clear dope at a hobby shop. You should also get your top coat colors there also. These are light weight paints that won't add much weight to your plane.

Pipe joint compound is for putting threaded metal pipe together.

Have your mom take you to a hobby shop, not a hardware store... in any event, make sure that you thank her for her efforts.

I built balsa planes when I was a teen and had a lot of fun... enjoy!!!!
