Help with 720p MKV format?

I just downloaded an MKV video file that is supposed to be 720p resolution. I am trying to open it with VLC but the video seems to play for like 2 seconds and then it stops the screen becomes pixilated and filled with artifacts but the sound keeps going. After a few seconds it plays fine for 2 seconds and so on…Is the file corrupt or is my graphics card not able to handle 720p? I have played other video files like DIVX and AVI that were supposed to be HD so I am not sure if there is a difference between HD and 720p. I have a 128Mb ATI video card, my screen can definitely handle HD, and it’s connected by a DVI cable. Is MKV just a really crappy format?

  1. An MKV file is a video container and a not video format.

Sounds like there is a bottleneck somewhere... might be your graphics card, could be CPU or RAM as well.
